Karen's Background
My background is writing, but I love to paint. I've been a writer for 20 years but have a passion for painting, so I combined my writing skills and creative energy to develop Shoestring Studio in 1999. My first product, the Jesus Loves Me Jar, got the business off the ground and I continue to create new designs and Christian-inspired products. I also have a freelance PR business, and work for a handful of clients. doing public relations projects and special events.
I've been at this for about 12 years...I keep producing the items my customers want, but I LOVE to come up with new ideas, and figure out how to produce them and keep them affordable. I have been blessed with loyal customers in Raleigh and as they give gifts to friends and family across the country, my customer base grows! Their positive feedback and encouragement have keep me going. I especially love working with other artists and "moms" who take joy in balancing a family and business!
I work from a home studio with help from my daughters age 14 & 17. Sometimes I can get them to help me. Allison has developed a business of her own, designing and selling earrings. She has quite a following already!
Original Illustrations
All my products feature original illustrations. Many of these are the creations of my friend and artist Johnna Elstob...she's so talented and generous to share her work. If you've been to one of my shows, you've probably seen her hand-made wooden angels, stars or ornaments. Teaming up with Johnna to showcase her "doodles" as she calls them gives my printed products a fresh, original and upbeat look. Artist friend Erin Solomon also shares her sketches and lettering, which are featured on my journals and new collection of colorful notepads. Her business is www.prissypots.com. Her hand-writing is amazing and I am blessed that she shares that gift with me.
Shows
I work out of my home office in Raleigh, NC, and participate in several church and school art/craft shows each spring and fall. My schedule is listed on the home page.
I am part of a group of moms and artists who hold an annual art show each fall. We feature about a dozen local artists at our Art Party, held at the home of Toni Davis off Lake Boone Trail. Our show has a strong following, and we attract about 300 people each year. Check the site this August for details. It's usually held the 3rd week in September.
Where does the name "Shoestring Studio" come from?
The name Shoestring Studio comes from the same name my Grandmother, Margaret Schumacher, used for her own art studio. With that maiden name, "Shoestring Studio" just seemed to work while carrying on the family tradition.
